5 Ways to Celebrate Pride Month In Your Workplace

Show real support for your LGBTQ+ employees while building an inclusive culture.

5 Ways to Celebrate Pride Month In Your Workplace

Pride Month is a vibrant, global celebration of the LGBTQ+ community, honouring their ongoing fight for equality and inclusion. It began in 1970, commemorating the Stonewall Riots of June 1969, a turning point in LGBTQ+ history (1).

Today, Pride Month is more than a celebration. It's a call to action for organisations to support diversity, equity, and belonging in the workplace.

Why Pride Month Still Matters in the Workplace

According to the Office for National Statistics, 3.8% of UK adults aged 16 and over identified as lesbian, gay, or bisexual in 2023, up from 2.2% in 2018. Among those aged 16–24, that figure rises to at least 10% (2).

These individuals are your colleagues, friends, and family. Ensuring they feel safe, respected, and valued at work should always be a priority.

Yet, many LGBTQ+ employees still feel they can’t be open about their identity at work:

• 26% are not out to any co-worker (3)

• 50% are not out to their manager (3)

Clearly, there’s still progress to be made in building inclusive workplaces. Here’s how your business can show its support and take part in Pride Month in meaningful ways.

1. Raise Money for an LGBTQ+ Charity

Supporting a relevant charity raises awareness and unites your team behind a shared goal. Whether it’s a bake sale, challenge, or special event, fundraising is a powerful way to show solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community.

Top tip: Add an incentive for your team, such as a reward for the person or group that raises the most money.

You can also invite someone from your chosen charity to speak to your team. This not only educates but also helps build a deeper connection to the cause.

Here are a few great charities to support:

LGBT Foundation

All Out

OutRight International

2. Challenge Exclusion and Review Your Workplace Policies

Use Pride Month as an opportunity to assess your workplace policies and ensure they support equality. Do you have policies to protect LGBTQ+ staff? Are pay and progression opportunities fair?

Shockingly, 1 in 5 UK workplaces have no LGBTQ+ support policies at all (4). What’s more, LGBTQ+ employees face a 16% pay gap, earning on average £6,703 less annually than their peers (4).

This month, take the time to:

• Review your equality and anti-discrimination policies

• Address pay equity

• Ensure inclusive language is used in your communications and HR documents

A more inclusive culture begins with strong, visible policies and leadership support.

3. Recommend Pride-Focused Webinars

Webinars are a simple, time-efficient way to educate your team and highlight LGBTQ+ workplace issues. They provide expert-led insight into how organisations can better support the LGBTQ+ community.

Many are free and take just 30–60 minutes, perfect for busy workdays.

Here are some upcoming webinars:

Encourage your team to attend and follow up with a team discussion or Q&A.

4. Celebrate with Inclusive Office Decorations

Decorating your workspace for Pride can be a fun and meaningful way to spark conversations and raise visibility.

You could add:

• Pride flags and banners

• Posters with educational content and allyship tips

• Rainbow-themed decorations that promote inclusivity

Top Tip: Make posters informative by including facts and real voices from the LGBTQ+ community to foster understanding and empathy.

5. Share Your Support on Social Media

Promote your Pride Month activities on social media to highlight your organisation’s commitment to inclusion. It’s a great way to celebrate with your wider network and position your business as a diversity-driven employer.

Content ideas:

• Behind-the-scenes videos from your Pride activities

• Employee testimonials

• Infographics showing how you support LGBTQ+ colleagues

Use hashtags like #PrideMonth, #WorkplaceInclusion, #EqualityMatters to reach a wider audience and amplify your message.
