Video streaming giant Netflix has announced a commitment to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by the end of 2022.
“Scientists around the world agree we need to stabilize the climate at no more than a 1.5ºC temperature rise to avoid the worst results of climate change.”

The company’s Net Zero + Nature plans will see the company make more environmentally friendly productions, as well as create offset programmes to restore and conserve areas like grasslands and tropical forests. Netflix was able to reduce its carbon output in 2020, producing 1.1 million tonnes of emissions, compared to 1.3 million in 2019. Netflix’s plan involves the following three steps.
Netflix has committed to reducing its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 45% by 2030, aligning with the Paris Agreement’s goal to limit global warming to 1.5°C.
Retain existing carbon storage
By the end of 2021, Netflix commits to offsetting all of the emissions it can’t avoid internally, by investing in carbon-offset projects that conserve critical biodiversity in areas such as tropical forests.
Remove carbon from the atmosphere
By the end of 2022, Netflix says it will incorporate investment in the regeneration of critical natural ecosystems to achieve net-zero. This will include projects like restoring grasslands, mangroves and healthy soils, capture and store carbon.
