How West London NHS Trust Reached 100,000 Moments of Appreciation

People often think recognition is just a job for leaders. But the best cultures of appreciation grow from daily interactions between colleagues, across teams, and throughout an organisation, not just from praise that comes from the top.

That is exactly what West London NHS Trust set out to create.

In 2021, the Trust launched its personalised recognition platform with a clear goal: to help people feel thanked, valued, and recognised. At the heart of this vision was a key belief: appreciation should come from everyone, because recognition from peers is just as important as recognition from managers.

What started as an idea inspired by employee feedback has grown into something much more meaningful, becoming a culture of appreciation shaped by everyday moments of gratitude.

Recognition that goes beyond leadership

This month, West London NHS Trust reached a major milestone: 100,000 Ecards sent through its personalised platform, Praise.

That number is more than just messages. It stands for 100,000 moments of gratitude, 100,000 chances to build connection, and 100,000 reminders to people across the Trust that their work matters.

As Ali Webster, Director of Organisational Development at West London NHS Trust, shared:

What started back on 7th February 2022 as an idea rooted in listening to what matters, has now grown into something truly meaningful and powerful - thousands of moments of thanks and gratitude, celebrations, Birthday wishes, recognition for long service, real connection and real recognition across our Trust.”

This is a strong example of what can happen when recognition is visible, easy, and part of daily work life. Too often, employee recognition only happens for big achievements, formal awards, or annual celebrations. But culture is shaped by what people experience every day!
Why everyday recognition matters

Every Ecard sent through Praise (their personalised platform) is a small but meaningful act of appreciation. It could be a thank you after a tough shift, a celebration of long service, a birthday message, a note of encouragement, or recognition of teamwork, kindness, and support.

On their own, these moments might seem small. But together, they help build a stronger sense of belonging, connection, and shared purpose across the Trust.

For organisations that want to build more connected and engaged cultures, the lesson is clear. Recognition works best when it is easy to give, meaningful to receive, and open to everyone.

West London NHS Trust’s success shows that when organisations listen to their people and give them the right tools for appreciation, recognition becomes more than just an initiative. It becomes part of the culture!

To mark the milestone, the Trust recognised the team that sent the most Ecards, along with the individuals who sent and received the 100,000th Ecard, a fitting celebration of the people who brought the platform to life.

Bethan Shannon, Head of Customer Success Manager, shares, “We are very proud to have worked with West London NHS Trust over the past five years and to see the positive impact their recognition platform has made. They have truly created something special for their team.”

At Each Person, we believe the most meaningful recognition creates something bigger than a moment; it helps people feel seen, valued and connected across the organisation.
