LGBTQIA+ Workplace Statistics

Although Gay Pride month is a time of celebration, it’s also the perfect time to reflect. Not every workplace is inclusive or a safe space for those in the LGBTQIA+ community to work. We’ve pulled together some LGBTQIA+ workplace statistics in the UK to highlight how the community feels and where they are being failed.

LGBTQIA+ Workplace Statisics

  • According to Gay Times, the number of people who identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual has doubled since 2014.
  • Stonewall found that almost one in five LGBT staff (18 per cent) have been the target of negative comments or conduct from work colleagues in the last year because they’re LGBT.
  • More than a third of LGBT staff (35 per cent) have hidden that they are LGBT at work for fear of discrimination.
  • One in eight trans people (12 per cent) have been physically attacked by customers or colleagues in the last year because of being trans.
  • One in eight black, Asian and minority ethnic LGBT employees (12 per cent) have lost a job in the last year because of being LGBT, compared to four per cent of white LGBT staff.
  • Almost a third of non-binary people (31 per cent) and one in five trans people (18 per cent) don’t feel able to wear work attire representing their gender expression.
  • TUC’s recent report found around seven out of ten LGBT workers experienced at least one type of sexual harassment at work.

What These LGBTQIA+ Statistics Mean

Unfortunately, it is clear to see that these LGBTQIA+ workplace statistics are overwhelmingly negative. Much of the LGBTQIA+ community reflects on these statistics and is worried for their safety and their family and friends. In conclusion, it is up to allies of the community and team to try and fight for a safer and more inclusive workplace and the world for LGBTQIA+ people and further their employee engagement
